VOCAL-NY REJECTS NOMINATION OF HECTOR LASALLE FOR CHIEF JUDGE OF THE NEW YORK STATE COURT OF APPEALS
NEW YORK — In response to the nomination of Hector LaSalle for Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, VOCAL-NY released the following statement, attributable to Nick Encalada-Malinowski, Civil Rights Campaign Director:
“Under former Governor Andrew Cuomo the New York State Court of Appeals became incredibly hostile to the rights of people accused in criminal court becoming all but a rubber stamp for prosecutors. New Yorkers have been promised a break from the past administration, but Hector LaSalle’s background suggests that he would instead continue this tradition of Cuomoism to the detriment of the public.”
BACKGROUND:
More than a dozen state senators plan to reject LaSalle’s nomination next month. VOCAL-NY stood with allies calling for a progressive nominee before LaSalle’s nomination. Read more about LaSalle’s track record here.
