FORMERLY-INCARCERATED NEW YORKERS IMPLORE STATE LEADERSHIP TO UPHOLD BAIL
NEW YORK — VOCAL-NY’s Civil Rights Union, composed of and led by formerly incarcerated people, their loved ones, and other people impacted by criminalization, released the following statement in response to news that the legislature will discuss bail reform tonight. The following statement is attributable to VOCAL-NY’s Civil Rights Union:
“As the legislature prepares to make decisions about rollbacks to bail reform tonight – potentially throwing more Black, brown and low income people in jail, where they may die, strictly for political theater – we say one more time, emphatically, do not do this. Do not subject more vulnerable people to Rikers Island, to the many mini-Rikers Islands across the state; do not sacrifice our communities to cages just to support your reelection campaigns.”
