NEW YORK – Today, Mayor Adams released New York City’s Budget for Fiscal Year 2023, which maintains a bloated NYPD budget, but fails to invest in care and compassion. In response, VOCAL-NY released the following statement:

“With New Yorkers still struggling for stability in the midst of a global pandemic, pouring more money into the same failed tactics won’t make our City safer or more equitable. Maintaining the budgets of NYPD and DOC — the most-resourced police and corrections department in the entire US — while leaving other services lacking, is unconscionable.

What this budget is missing is much-needed investments into permanent housing and wrap-around services for low-income New Yorkers. While Mayor Adam’s budget doesn’t get us where we need to be, we are looking forward to working with the City Council to make care and compassion the norm in New York City.”

BACKGROUND:

VOCAL-NY’s budget demands for New York City build on last year’s demands: Divest from the NYPD, District Attorneys, Corrections, and the total elimination of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, and invest in what communities need – housing, social services, and care.
