VOCAL-NY RESPONDS TO THE RESIGNATION OF STEVE BANKS, NYC SOCIAL SERVICES COMMISSIONER
NEW YORK — In response to the resignation of Steve Banks, VOCAL-NY released the following statement attributable to Joe Loonam, Housing Campaigns Coordinator:
“Steve Banks has shaped the policies around homelessness in New York City perhaps more than any other public figure. It is no secret that we did not always align on our approach to end homelessness in this city. However, he did the work to hear the perspective of our leaders. In the spirit of critical laws and policies we’ve won to improve the lives of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness, we thank Commissioner Banks for his service.
It is imperative that the next commissioner of DSS is dedicated to centering the voices of those directly impacted by homelessness and poverty. We look forward to working with the Mayor-elect Eric Adams and his incoming administration in picking a new commissioner who will put this city on a successful path toward ending homelessness by providing permanent, dignified affordable housing to all those in need.”
